God the Spirit Given to Me

Question 53. What do you believe concerning the Holy Spirit?

Answer. First, that the Spirit, with the Father and the Son, is eternal God. Second, that the Spirit is given also to me; so that, through true faith, He makes me share in Christ and all His benefits, comforts me, and will remain with me forever.

The Necessity of Christ’s Death

Question 40. Why did Christ have to suffer death?
Answer. Because God’s justice and truth require it: Nothing else could pay for our sins except the death of the Son of God. (Genesis 2:17; Romans 8:3-4; Philippians 2:8; Hebrews 2:9)

Question 43. What further benefit do we receive from Christ’s sacrifice and death on the cross?
Answer. By Christ’s power our old selves are crucified, put to death, and buried with Him, so that the evil desires of the flesh may no longer rule us, but that instead we may offer ourselves as a sacrifice of gratitude to Him. (Romans 6:5-11; Colossians 2:11-12; Romans 6:12-14; 12:1; Ephesians 5:1-2)

The Benefits of Christ’s Ascension

Question 49.   How does Christ’s ascension into heaven benefit us?

Answer. First, He is our Advocate in heaven before His Father. Second, we have our flesh in heaven as a sure pledge that He, our Head, will also take us, His members, up to Himself. Third, He sends us His Spirit as a counter-pledge, by whose power we seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God, and not the things that are on earth.
